New for Christmas 2021, the York Minster Winter Village has just opened.
Found at the foot of the South Door of the cathedral, the village is a place to shop and socialise, eat and drink.
It features cabins selling Yorkshire produce, as well as The Village Bar – which serves up traditional gluhwein, draught beers and a selection of hot and cold drinks, including hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows.
Meanwhile The Dog Haus serves up a range of bratwurst, currywurst and loaded fries.
Visitors can sit at heated and covered tables to tuck into their food and drink, while enjoying a view of the Minster – and the Christmas Tree Festival, found in a marquee across the piazza.
Shoppers can choose from food and drink from the likes of Love Cheese, Wharfe Valley Oils, Reet Yorkshire and Baytown Coffee, and other gifts from Yorkshire Blankets, We Drifters, The Little Yorkshire Candle Company, Paul Franklin Photography and the York Minster Shop.
Maria Farrugia of CMJ Events, which organised the Winter Village, said the event would support York Minster and help spread out the crowds of Christmas shoppers.
“We are all about driving footfall to an area that is fairly under used,” she told YorkMix. “And with Parliament Street always being so crowded as well, it’s nice to spread everything that York has to offer out across the whole city.
“They even have their own Minster gift shop here selling Fair Trade baubles. So I believe it’s going to be a win-win for everybody.”
The Winter Village is open every day except Christmas Day until 6 January.
