It just wasn’t to be and after extra time in the Euro 2020 Final, England lost to Italy by 3-2 on penalties. That came after deadlock on 1 all after 90 minutes of play plus extra time.
On a night when everyone seemed to be dreaming of a repeat of 1966, England looked on course for a brilliant result when Luke Shaw gave them the perfect start after two minutes.
Italy, unbeaten in 33 matches, slowly came back into the game and were level in the 67th minute. Later It was all over with the penalties.
YorkMix Radio’s Ben Fry was there and said: “What a night, brilliant atmosphere and once in a lifetime memories but sadly it ended with disappointment”
YorkMix went to the Artful Dodger on Micklegate in York to see the match and take in the reaction to defeat.
The fans there had made much noise earlier in support of the team but were stunned when they realised it was not going to their night.
There was much praise for the England team, one person said they “did their best” and a general feeling that we should now look ahead to the 2022 World Cup with confidence.
Marc Allinson, the Dodger’s owner, said it had been good to host a big screen event, especially after having to close for so long due to covid, but it was, he said, very sad to see the match end with England’s defeat.
