A group of people gathered next to York Minster at midnight to say goodbye to 2021 and welcome 2022.
They went along to the traditional spot to see in the New Year even though the Minster bells were silent.
For the second year in a row, the Minster authorities had decided not to ring in the New Year in order to support public health calls for people not to gather in large groups.
Last week, York leaders urged people to celebrate quietly in small groups of friends and family, in order to reduce the spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.
Last night the war memorial gardens were fenced off.
The crowd was made up of people of all ages, including families with young children, seeing in the New Year together.

It was a good natured gathering, with a very low-key police presence. Without the bells, the New Year was heralded by people counting down from ten.
When the clock ticked over from midnight, there were cheers and cries of ‘Happy New Year’.
People hugged and kissed, lit sparklers, drank bubbly from paper cups and took selfies.
A happy New Year to all YorkMix‘s readers and listeners!
