City of York Council has explained why it closed one of York’s favourite parks today (Wednesday, 26 July).
As we reported earlier, Rowntree Park was shut all day due to high water levels.
Usually when it is closed, it’s due to the river flooding – but the Ouse is significantly below flood level.
But the high rainfall and river levels have caused another issue at the park.
Ben Grabham, head of environmental services, said: “Due to the unexpected heavy rain earlier this week the increased river levels impacted on the controls for the water supply to the park lake, which meant that the lake flooded onto the paths in the park.
“Unfortunately this meant that the park needed to be closed to keep the public safe.
“We currently have pumping equipment working on site, and we hope the park will be able to re-open tomorrow, once the water levels are safe again.”
