A specialist chocolatier in York has closed even though the business “has been a huge success in every way”.
Tempt York on High Petergate sold vegan chocolates and ice cream. It shut for good yesterday (Saturday, 20 August).
Owner Karen Waller, a chocolatier for 15 years, has explained her decision in a message on the Tempt York website.
“So, why? Is it entirely financial?” she writes. “No. The chocolates at Tempt are labour-intensive, which means it’s physically demanding.
“Running the business plus making everything has been fun, but it’s a lot – mentally and emotionally.
“Tempt has been a huge success in every way. Frankly, I’ve worked my little ass off for the last 18 months and the company is in a strong position if I did want to grow it.
“But this is where personal choice comes in. I have experience of the industry at all kinds of levels, and I’ve mulled over the options to grow the business, but it just doesn’t feel right for me.”
In a post on Facebook after closing, she said: “Thank you all for your support, your stories and your encouragement over the last 18 months.
“And thank you for your appreciation of what I do, and for loving the chocolate.”
Customers understood her reasons, but are sorry to see the business go. “No – this is such a shame!” wrote one on Facebook.
“I’ve only just found you and was so happy to find somewhere that sells vegan ice cream in York… wishing you all the best with your new chapter.”
