A long-serving scout leader has stepped down, having tripled the size of his group.
John McCarthy has been with the 1st Holgate Scout Group for 21 years but now he has decided it’s time to step down from his role as Group Scout Leader.
On Friday they paid tribute to his work and dedication at the AGM at Holgate Methodists Church Hall.
John joined the group back in 1981 as a Cub Scout and then progressed through Scouts and Ventures.
When he turned 18 John became a Scout leader and after doing this for 12 years, finally became the Group Scout Leader in 2002.
Chris Rodaway has now taken on that role and told YorkMix: “John has been pivotal in the development of the Scout Group for many years and as a result of his hard work the group has tripled in size, now with over 300 young people enjoying Scouting on a weekly basis from the ages of 4 to 18.
“On top of this John has also held roles in the Scout District supporting other groups in the local area too.
“All of us here at 1st Holgate would like to say a big thank you to John for all he’s done over the years, from supporting leaders with their weekly section meetings to creating the website and developing the group’s finances, just a few of the things he has done that have made a difference.
