Dragon Boat Challenge


Thirty six teams from across York will be churning up the Ouse to the strains of the Hawaii Five-0 theme this weekend. Yes, the York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge is back. The races go from Scarborough Railway Bridge to Lendal Bridge and take place from 10am – 3.30pm on Sunday. Who will take the Best Dressed Team trophy (or the coveted award for coming last as YorkMix did last year)?

Dawn French goes solo


Leaving Saunders behind, much-loved comedienne Dawn French plays the Barbican this Saturday, July 12 (7.30pm). Her her first ever solo show 30 Million Minutes is not stand up but “just me talking” she says – about her family and life in showbiz. Still some tickets left at the time of writing.

York City Family Fun Day


As their pre season training gets underway York City FC host Family Fun Day for charity at Bootham Crescent this Sunday, from 11am – 3pm. Find out the footballers’ secrets with tours of the ground and meet the players. Take part in a penalty shoot out plus there’s a bouncy castle, raffles, ice cream and more.

York Mystery Plays 2014


The Mystery Plays in York are no mystery. Appearing every few years on pageant waggons, the 12 plays are performed by local people at four locations. Be transported back to the medieval times this Sunday, July 13 from noon at Dean’s Park and 2pm in King’s Manor.

Copmanthorpe Horticultural Show


Get in touch with your roots and discover your inner gardening skills at the 17 Annual Copmanthorpe Horticultural Show. More than 60 classes cover everything from summer fruits and veg to baking and preserves and floral art. Check out the exhibits from 2pm on Saturday at the Methodist Church Hall.

Early Music Festival


The acclaimed annual York Early Music Festival runs from Thursday, July 10 to Saturday, July 19 and this year celebrates Spain as well as the winners of the 2013 YEM International Young Artists Competition.
