Arts Barge Riverside Festival
Have a blast this weekend with the Arts Barge Riverside Festival at Tower Gardens. There’s plenty of fun to be had for the whole family from music to theatre, dance, arts and crafts. Join Dan Webster and Sam Griffiths in their sofa session sing-along or learn Calypso Rhumba Dance. And it’s all completely free! This Friday, Aug 15 7 – 10pm, Saturday, Aug 16 to Sunday 17, 11am – 10pm
Family friendly films
The Aesthetica Short Film Festival have put together a series of eight family-friendly shorts from 2013, especially chosen for Picturehouse Cinemas. Included in the lineup are Jeff Call’s Estefan about the world’s greatest hairdresser and Aleksandra Zareba’s The Little Red Paper Ship – about finding courage to face the world. Showing at the City Screen this Saturday, Aug 16 from 11.15am
Photography exhibition
York Photographic Society is a friendly club that includes members of all ages and abilities. Their Annual Exhibition is held in the York Medical Society Rooms and will display a range of prints and photographic styles, with some prints available for purchase. Experience some wonderful images of York from Allan Harris, as shown above, and others. The exhibition runs this Saturday, Aug 16 10am – 5pm till Sunday 17 11am – 4pm
Butterfly walk
York Cemetery is a beautiful burial ground close to the city centre, home to a protected natural environment perfect for sunlit walks and studying wildlife. This Sunday, Aug 17 Dr David Chesmore will be leading a butterfly walk suitable for all ages from 2pm
Or get out of town with Beningbrough Hall’s Guided Walks, this Saturday, Aug 16, 1 – 2pm or 2.30 – 3.30pm
Castle Howard proms
It’s that time of year again – Castle Howard are hosting their popular “Proms Spectacular”, complete with fireworks, the English National Orchestra and even an acrobatic display by a Second World War Spitfire. Don’t forget to bring your trusty picnic blanket to enjoy a wonderful summer’s evening of live classical music. This Saturday, Aug 16 from 7.30pm
Stand up comedy
Forget the Edinburgh Fringe this weekend and head to the Saturday Night Lounge at York’sDuchess, the weekly comedy night in which four stand up comedians provide live entertainment. This Saturday, Aug 16 the acts include Daliso Chaponda (shown above), Dave Twentyman and Dom Woodward, starting from 7pm.
