Six things to do in York this weekend, August 10 to 11, 2013

Play Day
Remember the old fashioned games before the X Box and Candy Crush? They’re back, as Door 84 Youth Club brings back marbles, hula hoops and hopscotch to celebrate National Play Day. Brownlow Street is to close as kids reclaim the street, with barbecues, face painting and music to add to the fun.

Model aircraft
Those magnificent men with their model flying machines hit Elvington Airfield as the Large Model Association take over the runway. Pilots from across the country and beyond will be putting the aircraft through their acrobatic paces.

The big picture
We have some very talented photographers in York. And to check out their work, head to the York Photographic Society exhibition over the weekend. The added bonus is the show’s venue, the rarely opened York Medical Society Rooms at 23 Stonegate. And it’s all for free (though the photos are for sale).

Sweetie fun
Are you a sucker or a chewer? Prefer Polos or Pastilles? To celebrate some of York’s most iconic sweet brands York’s Chocolate Story is holding a sweetie fun day in King’s Square, including a poll on the favourite treat.

Maze charity day
The maize maze is now a firm favourite with York families, and this Saturday it hosts a charity day. As well as getting lost inside the dalek designed puzzle, you can take part in a water balloon fight, with donations going to the Breast Cancer Campaign. All good clean fun…

Summer music party
In need of some live music this weekend? Look no further than the Bad Paintings Summer Party at The Woolpack Inn. Featuring the likes of Fawn Spots, Missing Kids, H Grimace and Scott & Charlene’s Wedding (pictured right), as well as DJ sets, it will keep you rocking till the early hours.
