Selby Police say there have been a number of purse dipping incidents, where purses were stolen from peoples bags while they were distracted.
Females in their 70’s & 80’s were targeted when they were in local shops.
On some occasions the stolen bank cards have been used very quickly after the theft.
Young females aged around 17 yrs old have been distracting the victims by asking them questions or asking them to reach for items on shop shelving.
While trying to help they have had their purses stolen. There may also be other offenders carrying out these thefts.
Selby Police say they would be very grateful if you could please pass this information on to relatives to keep them safe, especially if they are more vulnerable for any reason.
Read on for some simple steps to make it harder for thieves to target you or your loved ones
Keep purses and bags closed and secure when not in use. Zipped bags are safer
Carry bags in front of you or diagonally across your chest
Donβt leave bags unattended while you pay for other items
Return cards to your purse or wallet quickly and zip/ button it up
Conceal your wallet in a buttoned or zipped pocket
Keep your mobile phone and wallet in separate place, not in the same bag
