Police urge parents to think twice about buying e-scooter for Christmas after rise in incidents
North Yorkshire Police are warning parents to ‘do their research’ before splashing out on an e-scooter for Christmas.
It comes as the police have seen an increasing number of youths riding the scooters.
Selby Police issued this statement: “Thinking of buying your child an e-scooter for Christmas? Please do your research first as it is illegal to ride an e-scooter on public roads and pavements.
“We are already receiving an increase in reports of youths riding around on these in the Selby area. Please be aware that your e-scooter can be seized by police and a fine given.”
The only e-scooters allowed to be used in public areas are those available to hire via official rental schemes, like Tier in York.
A number of commenters were worried about the risks. “Nearly ran a kid over in Selby using one on the road in the dark, wearing dark clothing going straight over the middle of a mini roundabout in traffic,” said one. “Very dangerous things for kids to be using.”
In September, we reported how a cyclist was seriously hurt in a collision with an e-scooter in York.
