Police crackdown finds ‘vast majority’ of York cyclists riding safely and with lights
Police have praised cyclists in York after an operation to check they were riding safely and legally.
The York City Neighbourhood Policing Team conducted Operation Shimmer patrols around the city centre this weekend.
Operation Shimmer aims “to promote safe and legal use of bicycles” across York.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Over the weekend local officers have been engaging with cyclists in the city centre about the requirements to use lights after dark, respecting the foot streets and pavements, and generally obeying the rules of the road.
“We’re really pleased to say that the vast majority of cyclists we spoke to were using their bikes in a safe and legal way.”
Cyclists who don’t use lights after dark face a £50 fine if stopped by police.
Police neighbourhood teams also ran traffic operations in other parts of the city this week. One vehicle check revealed that the driver had a revoked driving licence and no insurance.
The vehicle was seized by police.
