North Yorkshire Police has started an investigation into the crash which saw a tanker hit the central reservation of the A1(M) and overturn.

The motorway is still closed by the crash, between junction 40 and J42 on the northbound carriageway and between junction 42 and J41 on the southbound carriageway.

It is due to reopen this afternoon after the clear-up operation and resurfacing is concluded.

The incident happened around 7.50am yesterday (Wednesday) and involved a DAF HGV which is believed to have been travelling on the southbound carriageway when it collided with the central reservation.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital with unspecified injuries.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who recalls seeing the vehicle prior to the collision to get in touch as soon as possible to assist the investigation.

“In particular, we are appealing for anyone who followed the vehicle or may have dashcam footage of the collision.”
