It’s a big day for making statements.
Just hours before Donald Trump made his first speech as president of the United States of America, a group of York campaigners sent out a message of their own.
York Global Justice Now – part of a “global movement to challenge the powerful and fight inequality” gathered on Ouse Bridge to unravel four simple words.
At noon on Friday (January 20) they unfurled a banner stating: Build Bridges Not Walls over the side of Ouse Bridge.
One of Donald Trump’s most controversial election campaign pledges was that the US would build a wall on its border with Mexico.
Timed to coincide with the US president’s inauguration the aim was, the organisers said,
We are not protesting the democratic choice of the US to elect Donald Trump, rather we are protesting the politics and language which have given rise to his election.
