A tangle mess of twisted steel and collapsed brickwork – this is the scene at the B&M store at Clifton Moor in York today.
The aftermath of the fire on Saturday (October 13) has gutted the large retail unit.
Walls are down, the roof has collapsed, and anything that was inside the store has been completely destroyed.
The level of the destruction is an indication of the fierceness of the fire, which burned for several hours.
Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident. The building and surrounding area was quickly evacuated by emergency services.
Investigation underway
Fire crews and police remained at the scene today. North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said an investigation was underway into the cause of the blaze.
At its peak, the service had 10 pumps, two aerial ladder platforms and two water bowsers deployed at the fire.
Roads were closed, including a section of the ring road, as smoke made driving difficult. All roads were reopened by 11pm last night.
Officials from B&M were seen inspecting the remains this morning.
In a tweet, B&M Stores said: “All of our colleagues are safe and fire and emergency services responded as soon as possible.”
Roko Gym, which is next door to B&M, remains closed today (Sunday) but hopes to reopen on Monday.
It has been a torrid few weeks for the retailer in York. Last month a man died working on the new B&M store at Foss Islands Road.
