Misery of vandalism, partying and ‘public toileting’ to be tackled by united response
Anti-social behaviour around Knavesmire in York has increased since lockdown was lifted – now a new initiative is aiming to help tackle the problem.
Several agencies have come together to help residents who have been suffering the consequences of the troublemakers.
A meeting takes place tonight (Friday, 6 August) from 6pm-8.30pm at Little Knavesmire, where the police, councillors and others will be on hand to listen to people’s experiences.

Cllr Baker, of the Green Party, said: “Since lockdown was lifted earlier this year, frequent incidents of loud noise and partying, vandalism, inconsiderate driving, littering, public toileting and alcohol/drug misuse are regular nuisances affecting the lives of some people living adjacent to the Little Knavesmire.
“We want to engage with residents and users of the Little Knavesmire to show that anti-social behaviour is not acceptable. I’d like to thank all residents who are coming together to make a difference – please continue to report incidents.”
Long-term solution
PC Suzannah Nellis said: “This event has the benefit of representatives from a range of agencies and members of the community working collaboratively to engage with the residents about their experiences and issues.
“Our aim is to find a long-term, sustainable solution and we hope by taking this collaborative, multi-agency approach and engaging with both the residents and young people this can be achieved moving forwards.”
An increased police presence has already proved successful in moving anti-social behaviour and joy-riders away from the area.
Cllr Baker said: “We want to find solutions that don’t have to resort in shutting off the area to everyone else – young and old – who want to enjoy it respectfully and in positive ways.
“Micklegate Ward committee is funding Door 84 youth club to do outreach work, talking to young people trying to engage them in alternatives and we are looking into extra security measures as well.”
