Police had to rescue a suspect from the river in York after he jumped in trying to avoid arrest.
The drama began when officers were called to reports of an ‘altercation’ between two men in the Fulford Road area of York.
One of the men was believed to have a knife. When police arrived, they ran off towards Mecca Bingo.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We were quickly on the scene, whilst one of our officers began tracking the men on CCTV.
“One of the men began running away and in an effort to evade our officers, jumped into the river where he quickly got into difficulty.
“We acted quickly, throwing him a life ring and were thankfully able to get him safely back onto dry land.”
After being checked over, the man was arrested on suspicion of affray and supplying a class A drug, and taken into custody.
