York’s city walls are now closed until further notice

York’s city walls are now closed until further notice, writes local democracy reporter Chloe Laversuch.

City of York Council shut the walls yesterday afternoon to help people observe social distancing measures amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Resident Dr Jonathan Fisk said he saw there were lots of people walking along the narrow city walls at the weekend, making it difficult to keep to the government’s social distancing guidance.

He said: “People could not keep a safe distance. The walls need to be closed for the duration.”
