York currently has the country’s ninth lowest Covid rate, public health leaders say – writes local democracy reporter Chloe Laversuch.

The latest rate for York is 15.7 cases per 100,000 people – which works out to around 25 to 30 positive test results a week, says Fiona Phillips from the city’s public health team.

The rate for residents over the age of 60 is even lower, at 12.1 per 100,000.

“We are really seeing the numbers drop,” Ms Phillips told the outbreak management advisory board today, Wednesday.

“That is the lowest rate within the Yorkshire and Humber region. It’s the ninth lowest rate across the country.”

She added that the latest statistics for Covid patients at York Hospital Trust show there were 12 inpatients – nine in general or acute wards and three in ITU.

This news comes as York recorded its second day in a row with no new coronavirus cases (Wednesday, 7 April).

It leaves the cumulative total at 12,219 – giving an overall infection rate of 5,801.5 cases per 100,000 people.

In the last seven days 21 people in York have tested positive for Covid-19 – down 30 (-58.8%) week on week.

The rolling seven-day rate in York is 15.7 new cases per 100,000 people (33 cases in the week to 3 April). That’s down from 30.4 in the previous seven days (64 cases in the week to 27 March).

The English national average is 38.6, the Yorkshire and Humber average is 78.1.

There were no more coronavirus-related deaths in the York council area today, and two in the last seven days (up two / 100%).
