New Year’s Day update: York’s 7-day coronavirus rate tops 300

Another 163 coronavirus cases were confirmed in York today (Friday, 1 January).

It takes the cumulative total to 7,404 – giving an overall infection rate of 3,515.4 cases per 100,000 people.

In the last seven days there have been 878 positive Covid-19 tests in York – an increase of 372 (73.5%) week on week.

The rolling seven-day rate in York is 320.5 new cases per 100,000 people (675 cases in the week to 28 December). That’s up from 170.9 in the previous seven days (360 cases in the week to 21 December).

That’s the first time it’s been above 300 since 23 October.

Weekly data

Triage: As at 28 December there had been 191 Covid triages in the York area in the previous seven days. That’s up by 58 from the week before.

Exceedance: The PHE ‘Exceedance’ rating compares the number of new cases over a 14 day period with the previous six weeks and provides a red-amber-green rating to indicate if the trend is worsening. The rating for York is Red. It was Red last week.

Testing: As at 28 December, the seven-day positivity rate in York (Pillar 2 only) was 9.2%. That’s up from 3.95% last week. The national and regional averages are 11.6% and 8.2% respectively.

Contact tracing: Since 28 May, 5,901 laboratory-confirmed Covid cases in York have been uploaded into the NHS Test and Trace system and 5,181 of the cases have been completed (87.8%). Altogether 15,936 contacts have been identified and 10,397 of these have been traced (65.2%).

Cases in care homes: As at 29 December, there were five care homes in the York area with at least one case of Covid-19 affecting either a staff member or resident. The latest outbreak – ie two or more cases – was reported in two homes on 24 December.

Deaths: In the ONS data up to 18 December, 211 coronavirus-related deaths were recorded as having occurred for York residents (102 in hospital, 91 in care homes, 12 at home and six in a hospice). That is three more – all three in hospital – than the previous week. The number of deaths per 100,000 of population in York is 100.18, which is lower than the national average of 125.89.

In North Yorkshire, there were 297 new coronavirus cases today, taking the cumulative total to 17,813  – an infection rate of 2,882.1 cases per 100K.

There are 1,057 cases in Ryedale (up 29), 2,781 in Selby (up 25), 4,480 in Harrogate (up 68), 2,378 in Hambleton (up 57), 3,991 in Scarborough (up 59), 1,407 in Richmondshire (up 26) and 1,719 in Craven (up 33).

There was one more coronavirus-related death reported by York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust today.

That takes the total to 374 across the trust (York and Scarborough Hospitals).
