Friday update: More than 400 people in York have now died after contracting coronavirus

Another 74 coronavirus cases were confirmed in York today (Friday, 27 August).

That takes the cumulative case total to 19,822 – giving an overall infection rate of 9,393.8 cases per 100,000 people.

In the last seven days 570 people in York have tested positive for Covid-19 – down 143 (-20.1%) week on week.

The rolling seven-day rate in York is 306.1 new cases per 100,000 people (646 cases in the week to 23 August). That’s down from 318.9 in the previous seven days (673 cases in the week to 16 August).

The English national average is 332, the Yorkshire and Humber average is 356.4.

There were no coronavirus deaths in the City of York Council area reported today, and four in the last seven days (as at 27 August).

Weekly data

Triage: As at 24 August there had been 42 Covid triages in the York area in the previous seven days. There were 43 last week.

Symptomatic Covid: As at 26 August, the Covid Symptom App estimates 826 per 100,000 in York with symptomatic Covid (responses from a sample of 3,453 people). It was 1,415 last week. The peak rate was 1,661 on 28 July.

Ranking: York is currently ranked 64th out of 149 Upper Tier Local Authorities (UTLAs) in England on case rates, with a rank of 1 indicating the lowest seven day rate. It was 92nd last week.

Exceedance: The PHE ‘Exceedance’ rating compares the number of new cases over a 14 day period with the previous six weeks and provides a red-amber-green rating to indicate if the trend is worsening. The rating for York is Red. It was Red last week.

Testing: As at 24 August, the seven-day positivity rate in York (Pillar 2 PCR tests only) was 14.17%. That’s up from 13.35% last week. The national and regional averages are 13.8% and 16.3% respectively. The latest 7 day positivity rate in York for Pillar 1 tests only was 1.3% (down from 1.4% last week). The national average is 1.9%.

Local contact tracing: Between 10 March and 20 August, 3,762 referrals had been actioned by the local contact tracing service. Of the referrals actioned, 3,367 (89.5%) were successful and 395 (10.5%) were unable to be reached via phone or home visit.

Cases in care homes: As at 20 August there were four care homes in the CYC area with confirmed Covid-19 infection (at least 1 case of either a staff member or resident) – down from nine last week.

Cases among children: In the seven days up to 23 August there were 86 children of primary and secondary school age who tested positive, down from 100 children the week before.

Deaths: In the ONS data up to 13 August, 402 coronavirus-related deaths were recorded as having occurred for York residents (231 in hospital, 136 in care homes, 27 at home/elsewhere and eight in a hospice). That is up three since the previous week. The number of deaths per 100,000 of population in York is 190.51 which is lower than the national average of 236.

Covid bed occupancy: As at 24 August, there were 33 confirmed Covid-19 patients in General and Acute beds at York Hospital, up from 24 last week. The peak number was 157 on 19 January. There was four confirmed Covid-19 patients in the Intensive Treatment Unit, one more than last week.

Total vaccinations: As at 25 August, 151,179 York residents had had the first dose of the vaccine (84.8% of people aged 16+); and 130,163 had had both doses (73% of people aged 16+).

In North Yorkshire, there were 274 new coronavirus cases today, taking the cumulative total to 49,903 – an infection rate of 8,041 cases per 100K.

There were no coronavirus-related deaths reported by York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust today.

That leaves the total at 625 across the trust (York and Scarborough Hospitals).

There were five coronavirus patients admitted to the York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust trust on 22 August, and 43 in the previous seven days (up 18).
