All Saints celebrates its best ever results

All Saints' Miriam Griffin is really happy with her results – a mixture of 7s, 8s and 9s

Students and Staff at All Saints RC School are celebrating the school’s best ever results.

With 84% of students achieving a standard pass and a 70% achieving a strong pass in English and maths, the students are in a great position to be able to move on to A level study at All Saints or to the next stage in their lives.

Headteacher Sharon Keelan-Beardsley is delighted for the students. “Our school has seen a steady improvement in results over the last few years, however, these are the first set of publish results since 2019 and they are very much in line with our teacher assessed grades from 2020 and 2021.

“I couldn’t be more proud of what our young people have achieved. They have been supported every step of the way by a fantastic and committed team of staff and caring and supportive families and their hard work and dedication has been justly rewarded.

“We celebrate the achievements of all our young people, including those who have achieved a full complement of 9’s and 8’s as well as those who have made excellent progress from their starting point.

“The challenges of the last few years have added different pressures and complexities to the lives of many of our students, but with the highest ever progress figures, I think we can conclude that the academic rigour students can expect at All Saints, combined with excellent pastoral support is a combination for success.”

Jumping for GCSE joy at Queen Ethelburga's

Queen Ethelburga’s (QE) is celebrating today following the announcement of the GCSE results for 2022, with exceptional results across the board.

Following a disruptive two years to their educational journey owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, the determination, resilience, and dedication of this year group has been rightfully rewarded.

Queen Ethelburga’s has two senior schools on their modern, well-equipped campus, which is close to York, Harrogate and Leeds, in Thorpe Underwood. This allows for a high level of personalised care and guidance for all students, and an innovative curriculum model to suit each young person.

QE Faculty and QE College have seen outstanding performances with an exceptional 27 Year 11s achieving 100% grade 7s and above across the two schools; and all students achieving a broad range of qualifications across the curriculum.

Giving congratulations on GCSE Results Day 2022, Principal, Daniel Machin, said: “We have been delighted to see an impressive set of results this year and we are very proud of all our Year 11 (and 10!) students for their achievements.

“Each individual has their own aspirations and milestones; one of the great benefits to attending QE is being able to share and celebrate the diverse mix of interests and skills that our students all have. We are delighted to see so many achieving what they have hoped for.

Students, staff and parents have worked exceptionally hard over the past two years, navigating a demanding pathway to reach today’s end results.”

Three York College success stories: Caroline Merrett, Alicia Renfree and Paige Garside

GCSE students from York College celebrated with friends and family on results day and planned the next steps on their learning journey.

The College, which offers GCSEs in Maths, English Language and Biology, to post-school learners of all ages, saw impressive improvements in grades from its adult learners.

Lee Probert, York College’s Chief Executive and Principal, congratulated all GCSE students on the results of their hard work.

He said: “These qualifications open the door to further study, paving the way for progression to high quality apprenticeships, vocational qualifications, T Levels and A Levels.

“At York College more than 20 per cent of young people improved their GCSE grades.  An impressive set of results for adults saw an 11 percentage-point improvement in grades nine to four in English Language and an eight percentage-point increase for GCSE Maths.

“Whatever grades you’re picking up today, schools, colleges and private training providers have lots of options for further study.  So do get in touch with us and let us help you choose your next steps.”

Amongst those celebrating was Caroline Merrett, 46, from York, who said: “I had no GCSEs but I thought I’d like to get maths, and today I’ve got a grade five.

“I really enjoyed it at York College – both the studying and the social aspect. I’ve now signed up to study counselling and I feel really good.”

Meanwhile, Emma Burnett, 43, From North Duffield near Selby was thrilled to discover she had achieved grade four in biology and grade five in English language.

“My aim is to get onto an Access to Higher Education course and from there I want to go into midwifery. I need English, Maths and Biology to get onto the access course, so my results today are a big step towards that. I start my maths GCSE in September.

“I feel really good today. I was convinced I hadn’t done well. I had to study while I was working and looking after my two kids. Now I feel like all my hard work was worthwhile.”

Troy Thompson, 17, from York, obtained grade four in Maths and a grade three in English Language. He said: “I think I may retake Maths and aim for a grade five and I will definitely take English again.

“I start my Level 3 Business course in September and I’m looking at eventually going to university.”

“My maths teachers gave me a lot of support by running extra sessions and offering help. They are amazing people!”

Despite the disruption to their typical teaching delivery, the year 11 pupils continued to flourish as they quickly adapted to new methods of online learning as proven in the results they achieved.

Expressing his delight, principal David Griffiths, said: “The girls have achieved an excellent set of results that reflects all the hard work of our girls and staff over the past two years. Big regional variations in GCSE grades

There’s a political row brewing over the big disparities in GCSE grades in different regions.

The GCSE pass rate is just 69.6% in Yorkshire & the Humber as compared to 76.7% in London.

The percentage of GCSE entries awarded the top grades also varied sharply, from 23.1% in North-west England to 32.6% in London and 37% in Northern Ireland.

Yorkshire & the Humber scored 22.4%.

Asked on Sky News about possible reasons for disparities, shadow education minister Stephen Morgan said: “Because the Government failed children and the children recovery plan hasn’t actually made a real difference across the country.”

While education secretary Will Quince told Times Radio: “It’s a huge priority. Ensuring that wherever you live up and down our country that you have access to a world-class education, and you have the same opportunity – whether you live in Bournemouth or Barnsley – is really important to us, and every year up until the pandemic we’ve been closing the attainment gap.”

GCSE grade percentages by nation and region

The percentage of GCSE entries awarded the top grades (7/A or above)

  • North-east England 22.4% (2021: 24.5%; 2019: 16.4%)

  • South-east England 29.2% (2021: 31.9%; 2019: 23.5%)
  • London 32.6% (2021: 34.5%; 2019: 25.7%)

GCSE grades down from 2021 record high, but above pre-pandemic levels

Top grades for GCSEs are down on last year – but remain higher than pre-pandemic levels, the full figures show.

In 2021, the proportion of GCSE entries awarded top grades surged to an all-time high. It followed exams being cancelled for the second year in a row due to Covid-19. Pupils were given results determined by their teachers.

Similar to the pattern with A-level results, published last week, it had been expected that grades would drop below last year, but remain above those from 2019 as students returned to sitting exams for the first time in three years.

Figures published by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) – covering GCSE entries from students predominantly in England, Wales and Northern Ireland – showed top grades of 7/A have fallen from 28.9% in 2021 to 26.3% this year, a drop of 2.6 percentage points.

But this remains higher than the equivalent figure for 2019 of 20.8%.

The proportion of entries receiving a 4/C – considered a pass – dropped from 77.1% in 2021 to 73.2% this year, a fall of 3.9 percentage points, but higher than 67.3% in 2019.

Girls continued their lead over boys this year, with 30.0% of entries achieving a 7/A, compared with 22.6% for males.

The gap has closed slightly from last year, when 33.4% of female entries were awarded 7/A or above compared with 24.4% for males, a lead of 9.0 percentage points.

Separate figures, published by exams regulator Ofqual, showed that 2,193 16-year-olds in England got grade 9 in all their subjects – including 13 students who did at least 12 GCSEs.

It’s been good to get back to proper exams this year and it’s been impressive to see the manner in which our Year 11 students have taken these exams in their stride.

It was a delight to see so many happy faces this morning; as students celebrated their achievements with friends, family and school staff. The results they have achieved today will enable them to take the next steps in their education with a great deal of confidence. It’s been a great team effort and one we are very proud of.

Good luck to all!

Hundreds of students are getting their GCSE results at schools and colleges across York and North Yorkshire today.

Here’s how the grading works.

In England, traditional A* to G grades were replaced in recent years with a 9 to 1 system, with 9 being the highest mark.

In general, a grade 7-9 is roughly equivalent to A-A*, while a grade 4 and above is roughly equivalent to a C and above.

Traditional A*-G grades are still used in Northern Ireland and Wales.

Similar to the pattern with A-level results, published last week, it is expected that results will drop below last year, but remain above those from 2019.

This year, exams were graded more generously in a bid to provide a safety net for students in the move back towards pre-pandemic arrangements.
