A York singer launches her debut album this week – describing it as ‘Fleetwood Mac or Kate Bush for the 21st century’.
The vocalist is one of the most popular to regularly feature in York’s charity-raising ‘A Night to Remember’ events, and has been working on the 12-track album for the past few years.
The songs were written and produced by Andy Firth who was previously in Leeds-based Britpop band The Dandys.
“We delved into quite a few different musical styles,” says Jessica.
“But one similarity between all of the tracks is that they’re pop songs which draw from life experience.
“There’s an interesting contrast between uplifting music and sad lyrics throughout the album, as well as a recurring theme of finding hope through adversity.”
Jessica’s soulful vocals have been compared to Florence Walsh and Lady Gaga, although her singing style is most definitely her own.
Musically, ‘Higher Frequencies’ takes inspiration from the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties right up to the modern day.
“I see it as Fleetwood Mac or Kate Bush for the 21st century”, says Jessica.
“I worked with Andy before as part of the band Deltawave, so we found making this new album a really easy process”.
‘Higher Frequencies’ by Jessica Steel is out on Friday (14 October) on all streaming platforms and can be downloaded from iTunes, Amazon and various other providers. Preview the full album here.
