January campaign to encourage sustainable journeys

Wed 16 Jan, 2013 @ 2.52 pm News Press Release

Issued by City of York Council

City of York Council has launched a January campaign to encourage residents and commuters to think about how they travel from A to B in York.

As part of the council’s i-Travel scheme, made possible by £4.6million of government funding which the council successfully bid for in 2011, the January initiative is aimed at encouraging jobseekers, commuters, residents and visitors to think about using alternative routes to work and leisure around York, such as buses, walking or cycling.

Cllr Dave Merrett, Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, said: “I-Travel is about encouraging people to make sustainable journeys and we want to encourage even more people through the rest of January to consider changing their commuting habits and choose cycling, walking or taking a bus.

“York is one of the top UK cycling cities, with over 20 per cent of the city’s population commuting to work by bike every day, and has good walking rates too, both helping to keep people fit and healthy. We also have one of the best Park & Ride services in the UK, with over 4 million journeys ever year, and are working to improve local bus services.

“We want to continue building on this excellent base. With the recent announcement that the Grande Depart is coming to Yorkshire as well as our annual York Cycling City Centre Races taking place this summer, we have the opportunity to make 2013 remembered as the year of cycling in York.”
