York’s Health Trainer service celebrated its first-year anniversary on 16 June, and has helped hundreds of York residents gain access and support to free health and wellbeing support.

More than 600 residents, aged 16 years and over, have benefited from the service in the past year. This includes around 400 York residents gaining support on how to quit smoking, and around 200 residents asking for help on things like how to eat healthy eating or weight management advice.

And there are places available now for anyone needs health and wellbeing support.

  • healthy eating advice and weight management

A qualified and skilled health trainer will then develop personal health plans either virtually, over the phone or face-to-face.

Cllr Carol Runciman, Executive Member for Health and Adult Social Care at City of York Council, said:

“The Health Trainer service is proving to make a real difference to so many residents’ lives, to make them feel both better physically and emotionally. It can be really hard to put in place those healthy habits, but the team can help support you with this every step of the way.

“Our free health training service aims to help as many York residents as possible to consider making choices that will improve their health and wellbeing. Whether that be stopping smoking, reducing alcohol intake or generally helping them to find groups or activities and get back into the community, there are plenty of ideas for everyone.

“We want to help you make positive lifestyle changes, and there is no better time to take the first steps.”

Residents have been sharing their experiences about the service, like Emma below. More health stories can be found here

Emma, a York resident who self-referred to Health Trainers, said: “Having a Health Trainer has enabled me to feel better both mentally and physically.

“I was sceptical at first that it would make any difference, but it has. My trainer was brilliant in that she didn’t make me feel judged or as though she was lecturing me.
