We may have reached peak internet.

People of a certain age will vividly remember the picture above – taken from the iconic title sequence to BBC children’s school drama Grange Hill.

On Sunday night, York designer and writer Daniel Benneworth-Gray dreamed that the Grange Hill animated sausage had gone viral on Twitter.

Naturally, he shared this with his 21K Twitter followers:

Dreamt that the Grange Hill sausage was trending and nobody knew why. pic.twitter.com/AioF4DIwy6

Then, with the help of game show supremo Richard Osman, things started to take off:

Can we get #GrangeHillSausage trending? What a start to the week that would be. Is the sausage being thrown, or is it being stolen from the plate? Reply with the hashtag. https://t.co/m4Dqisf1wp

Soon it seemed everyone was piling on to the Grange Hill sausage.

There were musical tributes…

Ember, my dog, noticed that #GrangeHillSausage was trending and asked me if I fancied accompanying her singing the theme tune. pic.twitter.com/xjS4hbP9le

Here you go! In honour of #GrangeHillSausage trending here's the theme tune on a squeezebox! pic.twitter.com/RsOcDPX4QL

And much punning tom-foolery:

Saw that #GrangeHillSausage was trending and feared the wurst.

And sure enough, mere hours after Daniel had dreamed that the Grange Hill sausage was trending on Twitter…

Great work everyone! #GrangeHillSausage pic.twitter.com/Yik1IjKrT9

So it just goes to show, kids – dreams can come true. And sometimes surprisingly swiftly.
