Ever fancied a classic pasta dish to take out?
Or yearned to break up a night’s drinking with a nice carbonara or bolognaise, rather than the usual chips or kebab?
Well your wish may soon be granted. One of York’s best-loved Italian restaurants has a plan to serve up pasta to go.
The team behind Caesars on Goodramgate want to open a new-style of eaterie, called Mezzo di Pasta.
No cooking
The owner of Caesars, Barbaros Ayata, hopes to open the business on Church Street, in the property last used by The Gift Company.
It will be limited to selling hot pasta covered in a range of sauces, both for eating in and taking away.
There will be no cooking on the premises – instead all the food will be made a few hundred yards down the road at Caesars.
Once it arrives at Mezzo di Pasta, the meals will be heated in a bain marie.
The restaurant will also serve tea, coffee and other non-alcoholic drinks, cake and biscuits.
Oldest restaurant
Plans submitted to City of York Council show that the ground floor of the Church Street property would be changed.
There would be a food preparation area at the back, and a range of seating both at tables and benches.
Opening hours are set to be 8am till midnight every day, with between three and six members of staff employed depending on demand.
The building, dating from the 1830s, is Grade II listed. There are no plans to alter the shop front.
If planners give them permission to change it from retail to food use, it will add another food and drink outlet on Church Street.
On either side of the proposed Italian restaurant are Yo! Sushi and The Milkshack, while the Golden Lion pub is across the road.
According to the planning documents, Caesars is York’s oldest Italian restaurant.
