Almost inevitably after the recent downpours, a flood alert has been issued for York today (Monday).
The Environment Agency issued the alert for the Upper River Ouse at 1.10pm, after rising water levels were recorded.
“Levels are rising in response to heavy rainfall on the Pennines over the last few days. Areas most at risk include riverside footpaths and low-lying land in York and to the south as far as Naburn Lock, including Kings Staith, Queens Staith and South Esplanade,” the alert says.

The Foss Barrier is being operated today from 4pm in response to the situation.
This is the advice from the agency: “Avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.
“Some low level flood warnings may also be issued later today as levels are forecast to rise further and peak on Tuesday morning.”
The level of the Ouse at the Viking recorder has now exceeded the top of the normal range, reaching 2.02m at 1.45pm on Monday.
It is predicted to reach 3.23m by 4.30am tomorrow, before falling back. There is less rain predicted this week.
