From today (Monday, 29 March) golf fans can now return to the green. We explore some of the best courses around the city…
Fulford Golf Club
Heslington Lane, York, YO10 5DY
For the Fulford Golf Club, the clue is in the name; not the word ‘golf’, but the word “club”.
Fulford Golf Club is an incredibly friendly, yet professional club that supports the development of some of Yorkshire’s finest golfing talent but also strives to nurture and develop golfers of all abilities.
Whether you’re an amateur who is looking to lay the groundwork in the sport of golf, or an expert who has been playing for years, then Fulford’s ethos of creating a community of members will help.
Situated three miles from the centre of York, the course has hosted some of the greatest players to ever play the game, in the likes of Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo and more.
There will be a further extension of their facilities on 12 April, when they will be hosting a day celebrating the return of golf with food and drink, open to members.
Heworth Golf Club
Muncaster House, Muncastergate, York, YO31 9JY
At Heworth Golf Club, they pride themselves on being incredibly friendly and accessible for golfers of all abilities.
Situated just a mile outside of York, it is considered to be a ‘hidden gem’ of a club as, according to their members, it might not get the recognition it deserves.
With tree lined fairways and quality greens, Heworth has a fantastic setting.
You can get into the swing of things by using the practice range area and putting green facilities. Heworth is not exclusively a members-only club. You can visit seven days a week for a fee, but if you catch the golf bug, then membership is an option.
Pike Hills Golf Club
Tadcaster Road, Askham Bryan, York YO23 3UW
The Pike Hills Golf Club was founded in 1904 under the name Knavesmire Golf Club. It moved to the current site in 1946. Being located just off the A46, it is easy to get to.
Over the last 70 years, Pike Hills have created an exquisite 18-hole parkland course, built around the picturesque Askham Nature Reserve.
The course has a challenging variety of holes which vary in length. You will also encounter a few ponds on your way around the course, and you are never far away from a dyke that runs through Askham Bog.
Whether you are a visitor or a member, then you will be welcomed at Pike Hill, where you can expect an enjoyable experience.
Forest Park Golf Club
The Village, Stockton on the Forest, York YO32 9UF
Forest Park Golf Club can be found three miles North East of York in the village of Stockton on the Forest.
It comprises a stunning 27 hole complex, comprising of the 18 hole Old Foss Course and the 9 hole West Course.
The flat course will help prevent any rolling balls with tree lined fairways and large greens. They take great pride in their work at Forest Park using modern equipment and technology to maintain the high standard of surface.
You can also receive expert tuition from club professionals, which makes it the perfect place for beginners to try their hand at a new sport. Whether you’re a visitor or a member, Forest Park welcomes you as they offer more facilities than just a golf course, offering a clubhouse overlooking the first tee and 18th green. Sadly, the club house won’t be open till after 12 April.
