The Republic of Venice is renowned as a hot-bed of political intrigue, and for its wholehearted patronage of the arts with the City boasting an extraordinary wealth of music making – for the church, the theatre, the myriad music societies and the celebrated orphanage-conservatories, most famously the Ospedale della Pieta. Venice rewarded talent, flexibility, and ingenuity. This programme celebrates this remarkable City’s contributions to the solo repertoire of the cello and the theorbo with music by Monteverdi, Piccinini , Kapsberger and of course the master of them all, Antonio Vivaldi.
This programme was recorded at the NCEM in July 2020 as a gift from Matthew and Kate to the NCEM and its audiences. We hope that you can enjoy the warmth of those long forgotten summer breezes and share with us the hope that 2021 is an altogether less ‘complicated’ year in which to make music.
Available to watch on demand until 6 January 2021
