A dog has died after people threw rocks off a York bridge onto cars passing below.

The incident happened on Saturday (6 May) at about 3.50pm.

Rocks were thrown from the iron bridge that spans the River Foss onto Huntington Road.

They hit a silver Skoda Karo, which blew a tyre.

Police said when the driver pulled over to assess the damage, her dog managed to jump out of the window into oncoming traffic.

The dog was hit by a car and very sadly died immediately.

Those throwing the rocks were described as teenagers by witnesses who posted about the incident on social media.

One person said: “Please talk to your children about how incredibly dangerous this is, as now a family have lost their beloved pet and the person who crashed into the poor dog is now traumatised.”

Roxi Greenwood, the driver and owner of Dash, the dog killed in the incident, described her family as “broken”, adding: “We have had to bury our baby and I am traumatised.”

“To the kids throwing bricks off Huntington Road bridge, I swerved to miss your brick – which shattered and burst my tyre,” she said.

“I slammed on and pulled over. You had scared my dog and he shot out of the car and was ran over and killed instantly.

“I am broken and after we had been scooped off the road by the police and brought home, I had to tell my son his best friend is gone.”

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Officers are keen to speak to anyone in the area who may have seen anyone on the bridge who was throwing stones into oncoming traffic.

“They’d be particularly keen to speak to any residents in the area who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously, or who has captured doorbell footage of the incident.

“They’d also like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision, or captured dash cam footage.”
