A competition is launched today to see which York pub can transform its beer garden into the best blooming oasis in the city.

Bloom! – the brand-new, four-day horticultural festival – has teamed up with YorkMix to launch the hunt for York’s Best Blooming Beer Garden 2018.

The idea couldn’t be simpler.

Any pub or bar in York city centre with an outdoor seating space can take part.

They have until midnight on July 27 to decorate their beer garden in any way they see fit – and the best transformation will win big prizes!

Simple… or outrageous!

The only rule is, to fit in with the Bloom! theme of flowers, veg and all things horticultural, there must be something within the beer garden that is growing.

York’s best beer gardens, updated for 2017. Cheers!

That could be something as small as a few herbs in a pot – or something far more outrageous.

Bloom! festival curator Lotte Inch said: “We want as many York beer gardens as possible to take part, helping to turn the city centre into a riot of colour this summer.

“It’s all about using a bit of imagination – the quirkier the design, the better!

“We’re hoping that bar and pub staff and their customers will pitch in to turn the beer gardens into something blooming wonderful!”

The competition is being sponsored by York BID – the Business Improvement District for the city.

Bloom! is the brainchild of Make It York and is supported by the York BID.

Four categories

There will be four categories:

  • Best decorated small beer garden
  • Best decorated large beer garden
  • Quirkiest beer garden
  • Most eco-friendly beer garden

And the overall champion will be chosen from these winners, and named York’s Best Blooming Beer Garden 2018!

There are some brilliant prizes, including:

  • £1,000 to spend at Jewsons
  • A year’s supply of Seabrook Crisps that’s 150 cases!
  • A pair of Alton Towers tickets – also courtesy of the wonderful Seabrook Crisps

The rules

1. The competition is free to enter
2. The competition is open to bars and pubs within the York inner ring road
3. Entrants must have a licensed outdoor drinking space – such as a beer garden or terrace – which can seat a minimum of four people comfortably
4. If you do not own the property, you must have sought and received express approval to carry out any of the changes to the outdoor space for the competition
5. All changes must adhere to current planning regulations
6. To enter you must complete the online form below and attach a photograph of the pub or bar’s outdoor drinking space as it looks now. That will allow the judges to assess the transformation
7. Entrants should then decorate their beer garden in any way they like – bearing in mind the Bloom! theme
8. There must be at least one horticultural item alive and growing in the finished beer garden
9. The closing date is midnight on July 27.
10. By that time entrants must have submitted at least one photo of their transformed beer garden to [email protected]
11. Initial judging will be partly based on voting via social media and a post showing the beer gardens on YorkMix
12. The judges will shortlist the best gardens, partly based on these digital polls
13. The judges will visit the shortlisted gardens to make their final decision, to be announced after the Bloom! four-day festival
14. The judges’ decision is final
15. Entrants consent to have photographs and/or video of their beer gardens shared online and through social media
