Call the Midwife star, Jack Ashton, is playing not one but two love interests in York Theatre Royal’s upcoming new production of Little Women.
Jack Ashton is best known for playing Rev Tom Hereward in the smash-hit TV series Call the Midwife.
Now he’s starring in York Theatre Royal’s new production of the coming-of-age classic Little Women – playing not one, but two very different roles.
Little Women is at York Theatre Royal from Saturday 21 September to Saturday 12 October.
Jack is playing suitors of the titular Little Women – John Brooke and Professor Bhaer, the love interests for Meg and Jo, and is both “excited and mildly anxious” at the thought of his double role. One character will appear in the first act, the other in the second act.
The story has been adapted by Anne-Marie Casey, and directed by the theatre’s creative director Juliet Forster.
Jack has worked with director Juliet three times before, and has appeared in several York Theatre Royal productions including The Guinea Pig Club, Twelfth Night, The Homecoming and Escaping Alice.
York remains one of his favourite places. “It’s such a great city,” he said.
“I love coming back, it’s a no-brainer when that kind of offer, like Little Women, comes along.”
Jack has coincidentally just finished working with Saoirse Ronan, who starred in the 2019 film adaptation as Jo March, on the upcoming film Bad Apples.
Alongside Call the Midwife, Jack’s other TV credits include Endeavour and Waterloo Road. Last year he joined the cast of Radio 4’s The Archers as Harry Chilcott. He also starred in the 2017 film Instrument of War.
His other theatre credits include A Streetcar Named Desire (Donmar Warehouse) and Strangers on a Train (national tour).
Tickets for Little Women start from £15 and are available via the York Theatre Royal website.
