If you’re already planning to get fit in the New Year we have some good news.
A new £2.5 million sports centre is due to open in York next month.
Burnholme Sports Centre will welcome customers from Wednesday 8 January. It sits alongside the community hub and Explore library, a care home currently under construction and plans for 100 much-needed homes on the site.
City of York Council executive member for leisure and culture Cllr Darryl Smalley said:
-
The new Burnholme Sports Centre is a fantastic addition to the community, and to the exciting new development underway at Burnholme.
After the festive period, do come and try the new sports centre out for yourself!
The facilities
Run by GLL, the leisure and cultural charitable social enterprise, Burnholme Sports centre will feature…
- a 25 station gym with the latest Technogym equipment and two studios which will offer an extensive range of instructor-led and virtual classes including Group Cycle
- a four-court sports hall ready to host a wide programme of sports activities including badminton and gymnastics
- new changing rooms and referees’ facilities at the existing outdoor 3G pitches.
The grass pitches will be levelled and re-seeded, ready for use in early autumn.
Tim Bestford, head of service for GLL, said they would be operating the new centre under the Better brand, and looked forward to welcoming its first customers.
“The new centre has so much to offer in a variety of different sports and activities and we look forward to helping the local community get more active, more often over the coming weeks and months.”
Council staff at the centre and contractor F Parkinson Ltd worked hard to keep the sports centre open for 29 of the 36-week construction period, and to support residents’ and clubs activities.
The costs
Membership for the new centre will start at £29.95 a month which includes unlimited access to the gym and fitness classes. Opening offers are available exclusively to customers who register their details in advance.
