West Bank Summer Fair
Featuring 30 local community and charity groups, several of whom are new to the fair, the fair in West Bank Park is on Sunday from 1pm-4pm. The Golden Railway Brass band will set the tone with a traditional musical backdrop to the afternoon, alongside the ever popular Miniature Railway. The bouncy slides, spinning teacups, climbing wall, ice creams and the “Have a go” sessions on the Bowling greens are always very popular – more here.
York Museums Open Weekend
York Art Gallery, York Castle Museum and the Yorkshire Museum will be absolutely free to local residents on Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26.
This includes entry to two new major exhibitions – Shaping the Body at York Castle Museum and the York Art Gallery’s Truth and Memory – as well as a Fossil Roadshow at the Yorkshire Museum. Jorvik’s new exhibition JORVIK: Home and Abroad at York St Mary’s is also included in the Open Weekend. More here.
After winning Yorkshire’s most outstanding festival 2015 the Apollo Festival is back for a fourth year this Saturday. Again there will be a full funfair, kids quarter, dance troupes, beers, ciders and a cocktail tent, all alongside four stages playing the best local and national music around. More details here.
Race For Life
This year’s Race For Life, fundraising for Cancer Research UK, includes three events. There’s a 5K race for all abilities and the bigger 10K challenge on the Sunday from 11am, and the Pretty Muddy 5K – a muddy obstacle course – on Saturday. It all happens on Knavesmire – more info here.
York River Art Market
York River Art Market aims to be an regular summertime happening along Dame Judi Dench Walk by the River Ouse, where people can exhibit and purchase original artworks. The first is on Sunday from 10am-5pm – more here.
The Little Mermaid
Based upon the original tale of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid, this new show from We Are Theatre features an enchanting new script, original music, a live band and lots of under the sea creatures. At the Joseph Rowntree Theatre till Saturday – more here.
