26 wonderful old pictures of York from the Past And Present group
To celebrate their first anniversary, the York Past And Present group let us pick some of their best old pictures of the city. Click on an image to view as a slideshow.

Please be aware that the photograph you have of Hull road, is the other side of town and is in fact Poppleton road/Acomb road junction at the bottom of HolgateYork road. I have lived for many years in both areas.
Thanks Anne.
We do try and get members to credit their posts to the originals but it is difficult with 6,000 members to keep an eye on everything. On the website we do give credits to everyone involved. The rules on the group state to give credits and accreditation but again it is very difficult for the admins to keep up with every single post but we do our best to keep up with everything as well as go to meetings and doing tours on a Saturday it would be nice if we were all able to split ourselves into a million pieces as i am sure we have all felt this once maybe twice in our lives. This is the other reason we are trying to make our own archive so we can add to the one York has already got as it stands very limited in certain aspects at the moment but like i said we are trying to help add to it but also add different features too. Like i said at the beginning of this post we are trying to do our best 🙂
Thank you for that assurance Lianne.
However, the fact remains that the pictures on this page are from uncredited sources and no acknowledgements of any kind are given. In one case (the aerial view of Terry’s) the appearance of the image here is in flagrant breach of the terms and conditions of the originating site, britainfromabove.org.uk, and this is made all the worse by the removal of the identifying watermark, as pointed out above. There is nothing “confusing” about the copyright position there.
Furthermore a visit to the York Past & Present website suggests that, however much the group may “frown upon” pictures being posted without due credit, not much is done to stop it: there is some crediting and reference to copyright (e.g. for York Press) but the site is full of uncredited pictures from archives and collections. That is not only wrong in itself but undermines the efforts being made by such archives and collections to open their resources to the public and makes the work of other researchers more difficult.
But your clear statement here is encouraging and suggests that the group is aware of the problem and will be doing its best to ensure good practice in crediting, acknowledging and linking back to original sources is followed. That is good news.
I understand there are confusions on the rights of copyright but York past and present ALWAYS give accreditation to the owner or website they have gotten there pictures from. Also there are images that are donated to them by members from their own personal photo albums and they do try to encourage members to always accredit on line and resourced images. The images that members personally post they have given full permissions for them to be added. Obviously some people post without giving a credit to the owner and this is something that York Past and Present frown upon.
Many/most of the images above are from the city archives. Thousands of these images are available via the online catalogue at https://cyc.sdp.sirsidynix.net.uk/client/en_GB/yorkimages, which is easily searchable and a very useful resource. It’s a shame this isn’t mentioned in the captions or text, as it would encourage others who are interested to search this excellent archive.
The aerial image of the Terry’s factory appears to have been copied from another excellent online archive: http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/. It has been cropped and the logo removed but I think it’s this image: http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/epw039027
The terms and conditions for use are here: http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/legalities#t&c
These links to the original sources and resources are important, I think, and efforts should be made to include them, and the image credits & copyright, wherever possible.
With all due respect to the York Past & Present Group, these are not “their” best old views of the city. They all come from other sources. This fact is not acknowledged and no indication of the original source is given. There are images here from York City Archive. These should not be reproduced without permission. Does the group have permission to reproduce these images? The picture of Terry’s is from britainfromabove.org.uk which has very clear restrictions on how its images can be used. Full attribution, for example, is required, and there is no attribution at all here. Even where attribution is not required by a rights holder, it is still polite (and helpful to others) to say where an image comes from, rather than passing it off as your own. However well-meaning this group may be, they have a worryingly careless attitude to other people’s property. And York Mix should have checked the rights status of these images before reproducing them here.
Hull Road, wrong, Holgate, just sayin’.
