One of York’s historic houses has been decorated for Christmas – and it looks pretty spectacular.
Treasurer’s House, nestled behind York Minster, has been transformed for the festive season – taking inspiration from some of the stories of Mr Frank Green, the last private owner of the house, and the people around him.
An Inspired Christmas is at Treasurer’s House Saturday 16 November to Wednesday 18 December.
Staff and volunteers at the National Trust venue have been hard at work giving the rooms merry makeovers for the opening on Saturday.
Many of the decorations have been handcrafted by the dedicated team of volunteers – including over 500 flowers inspired by recently unearthed love letters penned by one of the house’s previous valets and tree decorations inspired by the volunteers’ personal associations with Treasurer’s House.
In the Blue Drawing Room, local artist Megan Barnett has created bespoke glass ornaments inspired by ecclesiastical architect Temple Lushington Moore.
More bespoke decorations include costumed mice hidden throughout the rooms for little ones to discover – with each mice represented a servant who worked at the house.
The café is also bringing back their award-winning Christmas Pudding Scones by popular demand!
Visitor experience officer Rebecca Allott: “With its gorgeous setting in the heart of historic York, Treasurer’s House is already the perfect place to visit, these additional decorative displays at this time of year will truly make it sparkle.
“Treasurer’s House has a rich history and is full of fascinating stories as well as some remarkable influences from its art and furniture. The passionate team of volunteers have much to be inspired by when crafting the beautiful decorations.
“With a family-friendly trail around the house, and festive feast from the café, Treasurer’s House is guaranteed to get everyone into the Christmas spirit.”
The house is open for Christmas Saturday to Wednesday from 16 November to 18 December, and there’s no need to book before visiting. For more information, visit the National Trust website.
